Competition is constant in the corporate world. Even the biggest companies can’t afford to stand still or take things for granted, as that’s exactly when the competition will catch up or move ahead.
Given this reality, you need to do everything you can to stand out in a crowded field, including having professional corporate headshots taken to present your company properly to prospective clients. If new corporate headshots have been on your to-do list lately, keep these five tips in mind to make sure they come out perfectly.
Pick the Right Style
If you picture corporate headshots in your mind, you might see something pretty serious and buttoned up. That’s certainly one option, but it’s not the only way to go. If you want to present a traditional look in your headshots, keeping things formal makes sense. But what if you want to appeal to a different customer or client base?
Perhaps you are going after customers who aren’t going to be drawn as effectively to a serious profile but will respond more eagerly to something a little lighthearted and fun. You know your target customers better than anyone else, so lean into that knowledge and settle on headshot styling to match.
Consider the Appropriate Colors
Is there a particular color that would make sense to include in your corporate headshots? For a business with an established brand, you could turn to the branding to pull out a shade or two that can be aligned with your headshots through wardrobe choices, background choices, etc. You probably don’t want to overwhelm the images by using one color too aggressively, but a subtle nod to your brand could be a nice touch.

Practice a Natural Expression
It’s actually quite easy to pose for a corporate headshots, but this is something that intimidates many people. The best way to get over that feeling of intimidation is simply to spend a little time practicing in private. Take a few minutes to sit or stand in front of a mirror and home and work on the expression you would like to capture in your corporate headshots. It will only take a little bit of practice for your confidence to jump up and you’ll suddenly start feeling good about your upcoming session.
Weigh Your Background Options
There are a couple of different types of background options available for headshots. You could opt to have them taken in a studio with a backdrop in place, or the headshots could be taken out in the field. There is no right or wrong here, but it’s important to think about which will lead to a finished product that aligns with your goals.
The Magic of Lighting and Retouching
Good lighting can bring a picture to life. When the light conditions are right – either outdoors or in a studio – the subject of the image will be the star of the show. At the same time, even the best pictures can be improved a bit after they are taken. Working with an experienced photographer who will find optimal conditions to take the headshots in the first place, and will then improve the headshots later in the editing process, is going to leave you with images that you love.
